Not All Acupuncture Needles are the Same
The old saying ‘you get what you pay for’ also applies to acupuncture needles.
Expensive acupuncture needles are up to five times the price of cheap acupuncture needles.
What’s the Difference in Acupuncture Needles?
In Melbourne (and Australia), all acupuncture needles must be single use, sterile, stainless steel needles so all approved needles meet sterile, medical-grade needle requirements – particularly for acupuncture in Melbourne. But the real difference in acupuncture needles lies at a microscopic level.
All Acupuncture Needle Points are Not the Same
Cheaper acupuncture needle points, when viewed under a microscope, are not straight and sharp – they are bent. This is why you feel them more when they are inserted. Higher quality acupuncture needles are chemically sharpened to create perfectly straight and very sharp points. These needles are hardly felt at all when inserted.
Differences in the Structural Integrity of Acupuncture Needles
When viewed under a microscope, cheap acupuncture needles’ shafts are not smooth. They contain bumps and almost all have little metal ‘leaves’ sticking out of the needle. This again makes acupuncture needle insertion and withdrawal more painful. In some cases some very small metal ‘leaves’ can be left in the muscle after the needle is withdrawn. Note that there is no real danger with this and the metal is microscopic, but it is not ideal.
High quality acupuncture needle shafts have very high integrity, are straight, solid and smooth for very easy and pain-free insertion and withdrawal. They leave nothing behind.
If your acupuncturist in Melbourne charges a little more and uses much higher quality acupuncture needles, you will enjoy acupuncture much more.
