About Acupuncture
Acupuncture originated in China and was the major form of medicine there practiced for thousands of years. Acupuncture is the insertion of ‘hair-fine’ needles into specific points on the body to create a health response.
Acupuncture is perhaps best explained in how it treats pain. The body recognises the needle as something foreign and sends the ‘investigators’ and the ‘repair crew’ (ie. red and white blood cells, collagen, macrophages, etc…) via your blood stream to look into ‘the problem’. The needle causes a little bit of micro-damage in the fascia and muscle so you body does what it’s designed to do and starts to repair the damage. While the ‘repair crew’ is there fixing the micro damage caused by the needle it recognises and starts to repair the other long-term issue while it’s there.
It’s a bit like you taking your car to a smash repairer to repair a specific dent in your driver’s side door, but while they are at it they go ahead and fix all other dents or scuffs on the door so it looks like new.
Acupuncture has been around for thousands of years and this ancient treatment is still widely used today. Every day millions of people over the world get acupuncture for a wide range of health issues. Acupuncture can be used both for health issues and to maintain your health. In fact, one of the best uses of acupuncture is as a preventative measure against disease through regular monthly treatments.
One of the great things about acupuncture is it requires no effort on your part. There are no required exercises to do at home – all you have to do is lie there and relax for 20 minutes. Your body will then do the rest for you. It is particularly good for people who don’t have the time or discipline to do regular remedial exercises. It’s also great for people who just can’t do physio exercises because they are injured or too old.
From a pain treatment perspective, we believe that acupuncture is particularly good for any joint issues like knee pain, wrist pain and back pain. This is because acupuncture is able to get to the source of the problem to trigger the healing response we discussed above.
