Acupuncture For Shoulder Pain
Shoulder Pain Treatments
The impact of shoulder pain or bursitis can make simple tasks like reaching for a cup can become excruciatingly painful.
One effective way to address shoulder pain is with acupuncture. Acupuncture stimulates the body’s natural pain-relieving chemicals, providing relief, reducing swelling, and treating the underlying issues causing the pain.
Our acupuncturists have helped many clients with shoulder problems including shoulders that have been injured from a sporting injury.
The Main Symptoms of Shoulder Injury
Pain, restricted movement and weakness are the most common. Some people may experience numbness or a burning sensation down the arm.
The Main Causes of Shoulder Pain
– Osteoarthritis – can develop over time when the cartilage in the shoulder wears down to restrict the smooth working of the joint.
– Inflamed Bursa – the bursa is a fluid-filled sack the sits over your should joint. Sometime this sac can thicken and become inflamed. When this happens it no longer smooths the friction between your bones, muscles and tendons resulting in pain.
– Inflammation of the shoulder capsule – your synovial membrane can become inflamed. Or you may develop frozen should where your shoulder capsule becomes inflamed and tight to restrict movement. Frozen should can result from injury, surgery, diabetes or no known cause.
– Injury – impact or overextension injuries, sprains and tears can all cause shoulder pain.
Western Medical Treatments for Shoulder Pain
– Hot and cold packs – this can be useful in managing the initial injury or to calm any flare-ups in inflammation.
– Physiotherapy – aims to reduce activities that aggravate the problem and to improve the strength and range of movement.
– Medication – the use of pain killers and anti-inflammatories to manage pain. The long-term use of medication is usually not recommended and does little to resolve the root cause of the problem.
Will Acupuncture Work?
The primary for or treatment is gentle fascia manipulation and acupuncture.
Fascia manipulation involves the gentle movement of muscle, tendon or ligaments to improve movement.
Acupuncture involves the use of very fine needles to trigger the body’s natural healing processes. Acupuncture triggers a massive release of endorphins and enkephalines, which are powerful natural pain killers already residing in your body.
Acupuncture also encourages the improvement of blood flow to the shoulder so your body’s ‘fix it’ army of white and red blood cells, collagen and macrophages can work on the problem.
Acupuncture treatment generally requires no exercises.
