Chronic sinusitis can literally ruin your life. Despite it only being in a small section of your body (your nasal sinuses), it has wide-ranging effects and can really make you feel unwell and miserable. Acupuncture and Chinese medicine is one of the best cures for sinusitis infections.
What is Sinusitis
Sinusitis is inflammation of the sinus cavities resulting in pressure, pain and congestion. Chronic sinusitis is when you have consistently had the problem for more than 2 weeks. Some people have sinusitis for years.
The main symptoms of sinusitis and sinus nasal congestion are facial pressure, nasal congestion, pain and thick yellow mucus. The secondary symptoms of chronic sinusitis can include dizziness, headache, depression, brain fog, coughing, tiredness, balance problems, eyesight problems, aching teeth, post-nasal drip, loss of sense of smell and taste and a general feeling of being unwell.
Western Medicine Treatment for Sinusitis
There are a range of Western medicine treatments used for sinusitis. Almost all treat the symptom only, not the root cause of the problem. So if you stop the treatment, the problems will often come back. Let’s look at the main treatment options.
Antibiotics – are widely prescribed for sinus infection (some studies suggest that they are widely overused as antibiotics only treat bacterial infections and many sinus infections are actually viral infections). If you have a chronic and stubborn infection, you may be prescribed multiple courses of antibiotics, which by their nature also kill off beneficial gut bacteria, which can then bring on a raft of digestion, bowel and other health problems. Unless you know for a fact that your infection is bacterial, it is futile to take antibiotics. If you’ve taken a few course of antibiotics and they have had no effect on your symptoms, then look at other treatment options.
Analgesics – pain killers like ibuprofen aspirin are sometimes taken to reduce pain and discomfort. The main issues with this approach are that analgesics won’t always work and you can’t take them for too long – so they are not a long-term solution to the problem.
Nasal Sprays – decongestants do a great short-term job of reducing congestion, but they cannot be taken for more than a few days as they create a rebound effect and actually create more congestion.
Steroidal sprays can bring down swelling in the sinus membranes, but do you really want to be on steroids for the rest of your life?
Antihistamines – in many cases chronic sinusitis is due to allergies. Sometimes the allergen can be identified and removed, but in most cases it can’t. Antihistamines can help reduce the body’s histamine reaction to the allergen to lessen sinusitis symptoms. But in many cases it doesn’t seem to help.
Surgery for sinusitis – if there are structural issues (like polyps, deviated septum or other blockages) then surgery may help. However surgery doesn’t always help. It is an expensive, very uncomfortable and often painful thing to go through and should always be a last resort. Some people are even worse after surgery.
Chinese Medicine Treatment for Sinusitis
If you have chronic sinusitis and have had scans and you having nothing particularly wrong structurally or you are tired of taking drugs to try to manage your sinusitis, then Chinese medicine is a highly effective form of treatment.
The combination of acupuncture and Chinese herbs is a highly effective way to treat both the symptoms and the root cause of your sinusitis. We can give you symptom relief while at the same time treating the root cause. When the root cause is fixed you should no longer have the symptoms.
Acupuncture directly increases the blood flow to your sinuses and actively drains them. Even at your first acupuncture treatment, you will feel your sinuses draining and opening up. Chinese herbs reduce congestion, drain mucus and reduce heat and inflammation.
We’ll also provide guidance on what foods to avoid so you don’t aggravate your condition and to speed up recovery.
By treating the root cause of the problem, associated problems like headaches, tiredness, brain fog and general unwellness should improve substantially.
Our objective is to provide long-lasting relief from sinus pain, pressure, congestion and mucus plus to eliminate all associated health problems. Many of our patients have reported dramatic improvements in their sinusitis after a series of treatments.
If You Live a Long Way from Our Clinic
We need to see you for an initial appointment as we have to take your pulse to diagnose you properly. But we can also treat many patients with Chinese herbs only and can run most additional consultations over the phone and post herbs out to you.
