Sciatica Acupuncture

Acupuncture for Sciatica Pain

Our natural treatments reduce inflammation and nerve pressure and can reduce or eliminate your sciatica pain. We treat both the symptoms (pain, numbness, tingling) and root cause to simultaneously reduce your pain now and in the long-term.

Our sciatica treatments are gentle and don’t use any jarring or sudden movements so you feel comfortable during and after your treatment. Our style of acupuncture often results in pain reduction even during your first treatment.

We use a combination of multiple treatment techniques including sciatica acupuncture, manipulation, Chinese herbs, diet, special exercises and lifestyle advice. By not limiting treatments to one particular type, we are better able to tailor treatment to your particular situation to maximise effectiveness and pain relief.

We treat the whole person not just the problem area. Sciatica pain can come from a herniated disc, dislocated hip, osteoarthritis, pressure from the uterus during pregnancy, irritation and inflammation and your Kidney function (from a Chinese medicine perspective) and can be made worse through your choices of food, lifestyle, types of exercise and posture.  Finding out what is causing your sciatica pain and treating it successfully means we have to treat you in a holistic way.

How We Treat Your Sciatica

How we treat you will depend on our assessment of your particular situation, however we use a range of treatment modalities to achieve the best result for you.

Acupuncture for Sciatica

Acupuncture melbourne aims to deliver three treatment effects:

  • Reprogram your neurological pathways for pain. This is especially effective for chronic pain.
  • Promotes the body’s natural healing response around the cause of the sciatica pain.
  • Treats your whole body to put you back into balance so your body can repair itself.

Chinese Herbs for Sciatica

We use all-natural, plant-based Chinese herbs to reduce inflammation, promote blood flow and healing to the local area and to clear out any stagnation that may be preventing the area from healing.  However, the actual herbal prescription will depend on the individual and can only be prescribed after consultation with a practitioner.

Diet for Sciatica

Chinese medicine has a completely different view of diet to Western medicine.  We look at the flavours, energies (hot/cold) and target organ nature of foods to recommend the foods you should and (more importantly) you should NOT eat.

 Manipulation for Sciatica

We use gentle manipulation techniques which aim to relieve pressure, tightness and inflammation to directly reduce sciatica pain and discomfort.  We do not use any sudden or wrenching movements so you feel comfortable during and after.

Cupping for Sciatica

We use Chinese cupping techniques to remove stagnation and tension, and promote blood flow to the areas of sciatica pain.  Cupping is a often used along-side acupuncture and Chinese herbs.

Exercises for Sciatica

We may recommend some specific exercises for you to strengthen weak areas, reduce tension in tight areas and increase your range of motion.  These help to improve and maintain the improvements we achieve for you during your treatments.  Exercises may include Qigong.

An Alternative To Drugs And Surgery

Nerve pain is notoriously difficult to treat with standard manual therapies and medications. Medications (over-the-counter analgesics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAID) and epidural steroidal injections) may only mask the pain temporarily and may not specifically deal with the primary cause of the pain. Long-term use of pain killers and anti-inflammatory drugs may cause other health problems. Other common side effects of NSAIDs include gastrointestinal problems, raised liver enzymes, diarrhoea, headache, dizziness, salt and fluid retention and high blood pressure.

Surgery may or may not help your sciatica pain.  Surgery is a highly invasive, expensive and painful option that often comes with long recovery times.  In our opinion, surgery should be viewed as a last resort.

Our treatments aim to reduce inflammation and nerve pressure and reprogram your pain pathways to reduce or eliminate your sciatica pain. Acupuncture melbourne treats both the symptoms (pain, numbness, tingling) and root cause to simultaneously reduce your pain now and in the long-term.
