Digestion problems include reflux, colitis, IBS, h-pylori, gastritis, hiccough, dysbiosis, candida and parasites (eg. Blasto). Gastrointestinal issues are pervasive and significantly impact our ability to enjoy food, have normal bowel habits and be healthy. In Chinese medicine we often say ‘if your digestion is not right, then nothing else will be’. Our digestion is a key source of our vitality and health.
IBS is a bit of a catch-all in western medicine when a specific cause of digestion issues cannot be identified. Western medicine has not been very effective at treating IBS. Chinese medicine identifies the root cause of the digestion problem rather than just the symptoms.
Usual causes in Chinese medicine include inflammation or heat in the small and large intestine, emotional problems affecting the liver which in-turn effects digestion, an imbalance of gut bacteria, overgrowth of yeasts, parasites, or simply a general weakness of the digestion.
Dysbiosis is an imbalance in the gut bacteria that mainly resides in the intestines. Overgrowth of bad bacteria and / or undergrowth of good bacteria can lead to all sorts of digestive problems. If we suspect this we will suggest you do a stool test so we can determine exactly what you gut microbiology is. We then have treatment protocols to fix this problem.
Common parasites include Blasto Hominis and D. Fragilis, often with an underlying Entamoeba Histolytica infection. These typically can be picked up via faecal-oral contamination while travelling and from contaminated food. Symptoms include diarrhoea, abdominal pain, itchy anus, excessive flatulence, nausea, vomiting, fatigue and weight loss. If a patient doesn’t respond to normal herbal treatment a parasitic infection is often the cause.
Infection is confirmed by a faecal test.
In our experience, herbs do not kills these parasites. Only Western drugs will kill them. Western drugs such as Flagyl are used and take about two weeks. There is also triple therapy drug treatment protocol if Flagyl does not work but again it is not 100% successful.
We organise testing and refer for drugs to deal with the problem. After the parasite is killed off, we recommence herbal treatment to repair any damage done to the gastrointestinal tract.
H-pylori resides in the gastric mucosa and is common. Symptoms include bloating, belching, halitosis, nausea, dyspepsia and gastritis. If we feel H-Pylori in your pulse we will suggest a breath test to confirm it. There are both herbal and western drug treatments.
Yeast infections such as candida can also cause health problems. Infection is confirmed by faecal test and there are both western and Chinese medicine treatments.
Reflux is a common complaint, which can be brought on by medications, poor eating habits/diet and fundamental digestive weakness. Chinese medicine can treat the root cause to stop the reflux and remove the need to take medications such as Nexium.
Chinese medicine treats digestive symptoms by regulating the stomach, liver, spleen and bowel through acupuncture and Chinese herbs.
