Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia Treatment

Fibromyalgia is an inflammatory condition that causes pain, which has no identified root cause in Western medicine. In Chinese medicine the two causes of fibromyalgia are poor blood flow and malnourishment. Poor blood flow is often caused by being overweight. The vessels are squashed by the excess body fat making it difficult for blood, oxygen and nutrients to reach the muscles and joints. The result is chronic pain. Chinese medicine treatment focuses on vasodilating the vessels to improve blood flow to the body and acupuncture to improve the blood flow to specific areas of the body. We have regularly seen dramatic results from this treatment. If you are suffering from fibromyalgia come and see up for one appointment. If we can substantially reduce or remove your pain during this appointment, you can confidently continue treatment with us. It is a fast and effective way to see how well acupuncture will work for you.

What is Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a condition of widespread tenderness and pain throughout the body. Each person has their own particular set of symptoms which are often accompanied by tiredness and emotional turmoil. Approximately 2 to 5 percent of the population are affected, mainly women.

Fibromyalgia Symptoms

Direct symptoms include pain, increased sensitivity to heat or cold, numbness and tingling (particularly arms and legs), tiredness, memory and concentration problems and insomnia.

Flow-on symptoms include anxiety and depression, IBS, headaches, overactive bladder and swelling.

Western Medicine Treatment

The cause of fibromyalgia is not known in Western medicine. Western medicine treatment includes medications such as analgesics to reduce pain, anti-depressants to reduce stress and sleeping pills to aide sleep. Also gentle exercise, stress management and relaxation strategies, massage and nutrition counselling. The trouble with these strategies is that none of them address the fundamental cause of fibromyalgia in Chinese medicine terms.

Chinese Medicine Treatment

The cause of fibromyalgia in Chinese medicine is poor blood flow and malnourishment. When blood flow to your muscles, tendons and ligaments is poor they simply do not get the oxygen and nutrients they need to function properly. Without this they begin to hurt. To reduce and get rid of the pain, good blood flow must be restored to the body generally and more specifically to the particular areas you experience the most pain. Chinese herbs are used to restore the body’s overall blood flow and acupuncture is very effective in increasing blood flow and reducing pain in specific areas of the body. Together, acupuncture and Chinese herbs can bring on dramatic changes to reduce and even eliminate pain altogether. We have regularly seen this with our patients.

If you are overweight, this also restricts blood flow. We will also help you lose weight through acupuncture, herbs and diet. Our patients routinely lose 1-2 kg/week and don’t have to do any more exercise nor do they have to starve themselves. See fat weight loss.

What Should You Do Next?

Book in for an initial appointment. We will diagnose you fully and also treat you with acupuncture. The style of acupuncture we use means that in many cases we are able to get rid of your pain immediately (although a series of treatments will be required to keep the pain away). If we can do this while you are here at your first appointment, it means what we do will work for you and you can confidently continue with treatment. If we cannot substantially reduce your pain at your first treatment, then what we do may not work for you (that said we are able to help over 80% of people we see) and all it has cost you to find out is one appointment.

If your fibromyalgia is really bothering you and affecting your life, book in for an initial appointment. You will soon know if we can help you or not and be on your way to feeling much better and getting on with your life.
