Acupuncture for High Blood Pressure

Many of our patients have high blood pressure (hypertension) and are on medication to attempt to keep it under control.  Medications include beta blockers to slow and reduce the heart’s output (usually causes fatigue), ACE inhibitors/Channel blockers or ARBs to soften vessel walls or vasodilators to increase vessel width. All medications have side effects and don’t really treat the underlying or root cause of the problem, which means that patients are usually on them for life.

People come to us for treatment because they either don’t like being on the medications, the medication side-affects are too great or the medications simply aren’t working to lower their blood pressure to an acceptable level.

High Blood Pressure is Best Treated with Herbs

We don’t treat high blood pressure with acupuncture – we treat it with Chinese herbs.  We have found herbs to be far more effective.  Chinese herbs are natural and safe to take when prescribed professionally.  Chinese herbs can be safely taken alongside any heart medication. The only heart medication we need to be especially careful with is Warfarin.

Patients continue to take any medications while we treat them and at the appropriate time we liaise with their doctor about their medications. This way the patient continues with Western symptomatic treatment while we treat the underlying issues to a point where the patient has improved enough to then look at reducing or coming off the medication they are taking (always under the supervision of their GP).

Types of High Blood Pressure Patients

We typically see four types of high blood pressure patients.

  1. Overweight, feel hot, inflammation and usually constipated. We help these patients lose weight and we cool them down, reduce inflammation and get their bowels moving properly again.
  2. Overweight, weak, pale and anaemic. We help these patients lose weight and we strengthen them and build up their blood.
  3. Not overweight, stiff vessels (primary hypertension). We naturally soften the patient’s vessels. This can be the most difficult type of blood pressure patient to treat.
  4. Blood pressure that goes up and down. This is usually due to Kidney issues. We improve the patient’s Kidney function.

We sometimes see a mix of the above in some patients as well.

We use Chinese pulse diagnosis to determine what type of high blood pressure patient you are.  We can then more accurately prescribe Chinese herbs.
